Boardcollector- Buy & Sell.

We have just launched a Boardcollector- Buy & Sell page on this website.
We hope it can become an all encompassing market place where retro surf lovers such as ourselves can gather online to buy, sell, swap and haggle over boards, books, magazine, posters, nick nacks and surf history parapinalia. Much like an online swap meet with out the hot dogs.

If you have anything you's like to post for sale or swap, rent or share, send me and email with pics and details and I'll post it online for free!

Energy- transition period.

Alasdair from Victoria wrote to say:
Today I picked up a Simon Anderson thruster that had been left out on the street for a hard rubbish collection.
I've been trying to work out when it would have been made as the blank has not been dated, but blank is numbered 56.18.M.
This item on surfsearch is the closest - however mine does not have channels.
I'd be interested if you could shed some light on it.
While I was searching for details on the Thruster I came upon this blog - it doesn't have a lot of depth but it does document the hyper local surfing culture I grew up in.
Best,  Alasdair

From my reading of Simon Andersons's book "Thrust" I understand this board to be from the brief, turbulent but fascinating time when Simon was steering his career away from competitive surfing to focus on his shaping. I believe this board and the board below were from the short chapter in Simon's career when he was still shaping for under the Energy label while negotiating selling the business to Frank Latta. Around this time he had been advised by his manager or business mentor to emphasize the 'Simon Anderson' brand over the Energy brand.
So by that reckoning, in my opinion, the blue board is older than the orange board, based on decal size and placement, but are both from the period when Simon was still shaping at Energy, after they did the graphic update. The board on Surfsearch, although very similar in design, is shaped by Frank Latta and was probably done just after Simon's departure.
If my theories are correct we could date these boards to the year, if not the month.

Equally we could just ask Simon, but who are we to disturb the master with such trivialities, however intriguing.

Pycho spray

Check out this sick single from 1980 that I spotted on the main beach.
A kid was learning to surf on it in the close-outs!!
His Dad wanted him to get a soft board, but he wouldn't have a bar of it.
His dad aimed to put it on the wall in the kid's room - I couldn't imagine it being the most comforting image to look at regularly - But sooooo 80's!!
Spray by Jim Davidson 1980, Shape by David Gould.
Board was in very good condition barring the ding on the tail.
Couldn't bare to offer any money when the kid was so into it!!

Gav then paddled out and slayed this monster on his vintage Brewer pin tail.

Hurley twin fins

Before Nike, Hurley and Billabong USA Bob Hurley made some very nice deep vee  twin fins in the early 80's

Blue Bird 5

Our mysterious anonymous collector has shared some pics with us again, this time of his amazing Bob McTavish 'Blue Bird' collection.
My favorite has got to be the classic single fin pin tail with the old orange diamond 'Surf Dive'n' Ski' logo under the glass from the years when they only had one shop in Waringah Mall, Brookvale. SDS is now part of the 150 door Billabong retail group.
The early 80's double hip thruster is in beautiful condition and has an amazing spray and the San Jaun looks like it could have been made in the back yard of the Byron Bay farm house during the filming of 'Morning of the Earth.

Heres a couple of bluebirds of mine, not mint by any standard but interesting.
The little red one has the bluebird swooping upwards on the deck. Maybe glassing error or does it mean something? It also has " Mighty Mac Special" written on deck.

I can’t believe I saw a Bob McTavish Blue Bird single fin, in not as good condition, but not far off it, as the one that sold on ebay recently. The guy was riding it and said he had a couple more from that era. The lad had fixed the tail but the board still has its original fin.

Blue Bird Part 2.

Laurie from the Gold Coast sent me the ebay link to this :
"McTavish Bluebird Single Fin. In nice condition with some heel dents and a couple of small dings and shatters on rails - top and bottom are super clean. Beautiful green tint on deck with key lines and clear bottom. Measures 6'6" x 19" x 2 3/4".
A very nice board from an interesting period by an important shaper with sold wear and tear.
It sold for AU $3,557.53
.....about the price of a small farm house near Byron Bay in 1970.

R.I.P MP

Tyler has shared these pics of his Dad's beautiful Michael Peterson shaped early 80's single fly, swallow tail, single fin that's in remarkable original condition.
MP will go down in surf history as one of the sports most influential athletes and craftsman and is deeply missed.
