I was actually co-commentator at that OP Pro held at States Beach in Atlantic City, NJ in AUG '83 that Wes Laine won. My co-commentator for the event was Hunter Joslin. Peter Townend was the Contest Director.
This is Joslin at Cape Hatteras in AUG '83. Hunter let me ride with him as we drove his truck [this one] to his home in Florida. We watched the first ever night launch of just the 8th Space Shuttle mission, then flew to California to do the commentary together at the OP Pro at Huntington Beach in SEP '83.
